Ballast fouling occurs when fine particles from the subgrade, degraded ballast, or contamination migrate upward into the drainage voids, reducing the track's ability to drain effectively and causing progressive track geometry deterioration. BaseLok BallastGuard, installed at the interface between the subgrade and sub-ballast, protects the sub-ballast and ballast layers, acting as a barrier against subgrade migration while simultaneously reinforcing the sub-ballast and providing lateral confinement.  The result is a cleaner, longer-lasting trackbed that requires far less maintenance.

How Ballast Fouling Prevention Works

BaseLok BallastGuard, installed at the interface between the subgrade and sub-ballast, protects the sub-ballast and ballast layers, acting as a barrier against subgrade migration while simultaneously reinforcing the sub-ballast and providing lateral confinement.  The result is a cleaner, longer-lasting trackbed that requires far less maintenance.

BaseLok BallastGuard is installed at the interface between the sub-ballast and subgrade. Its carefully engineered aperture geometry allows free drainage while preventing the upward migration of fines from below. At the same time, the geogrid mechanically restrains the sub-ballast particles, reducing the lateral movement that generates fines from within the sub-ballast layer itself.

This dual action containment from below and confinement from within significantly slows the fouling process, extending the intervals between costly maintenance cycles by a factor of 3 to 5 on documented installations.
