Marine Ecosystem Rehabilitation

MARINE "MARINE ECOSYSTEM REHABILITATION"

Restore critical habitats with living shoreline technology

Preserving and rehabilitating marine ecosystems is a high priority for coastal communities and environmental regulators. BaseLok provides the structural foundation for "living shoreline" projects an approach that combines natural bank stabilization with habitat restoration. Our geosynthetic systems support the growth of native vegetation, provide stable substrates for oyster and coral reef development, and protect vulnerable shorelines from erosion without the need for ecologically damaging hard-armor.

Fostering Marine Life with BaseLok®

Living shorelines are the preferred alternative to traditional bulkheads and sea walls, which typically destroy intertidal habitats and increase scour on adjacent properties. BaseLok supports this "greener" engineering approach through several key technologies.

In deeper or higher-energy environments, BaseLok marine mattresses can be used as a stable foundation for oyster reef restoration. The high-strength geogrid cage provides a rugged, permeable surface that encourages oyster larvae (spat) to attach and grow. Over time, the oyster reef becomes the primary defense against wave energy, while the BaseLok system underneath ensures the reef remains stable and doesn't sink into the soft seabed. By integrating structural engineering with biological growth, BaseLok helps create resilient coastal environments that thrive as part of the natural ecosystem.

Applicable Project Types
